One-day workshops for teachers and trainers

Designed for teachers and trainers of trauma-impacted adult learners who want to use brain-based teaching and trauma-informed interactions to touch hearts, change minds and transform behavior.

Workshop 1

Design Transformative curriculum

Create a classroom-based, custom learning journey designed specifically for your clients' needs and improve outcomes and attract more funding with your results. 

  1. Identify the destination: Analyze your clients and what they need to do and accomplish in their lives and shape these desires into targeted, real-life outcomes as your curriculum destination.
  2. Mark the finish line: Brainstorm a realistic, end-of-course test drive task contextualized to your clients' circumstances as a test drive for demonstrating all the skills, understandings, and attitudes they need to be predictably successful at the destination.
  3. Score the fuel:  Unpack your test drive task to list the essential things your clients must understand, do and resolve to power themselves across the finish line; recording these in a one-page curriculum snapshot.
  4. Set up guardrails: Establish classroom structures and processes that create safety and encourage helpful learning habits and promote the development of executive functions. 
  5. Map the route: Create high interest and motivating learning activities aligned with how brains learn to make your destination and route attractive, engaging and relevant to your clients.
  6. Start where they are:  Prepare learning experiences that access and leverage what clients already know, using brain-based strategies to gain their buy-in and ready their minds to master new attitudes and skills.
  7. Travel in a carpool: Support clients in understanding, doing and resolving by leveraging the power of active and collaborative group learning to guide them in constructing knowledge together.
  8. Facilitate practice runs: Scaffold guided practice opportunities using modeling, coaching and feedback to build mastery in the understanding, doing and resolving skills that can help your clients achieve their goals.
  9. Schedule rest stops: Build in time and structured activities for individual reflection, refinement, integration, implementation and contingency planning so clients are ready to apply their new abilities out in the world.
  10. Offer roadside assistance: Include success checklists, organizational helps, reminders, visually appealing and reader-friendly handouts and props to help clients build executive functions and stay on track to the destination.
  11. Conduct the test drive: Provide learners with the criteria for success when you assign the final test drive so they know what excellence looks like.
  12. Celebrate the finish line: Plan recognition and closure activities to celebrate clients' efforts as they cross the finish line to their desired destination.

Workshop 2

Transform fight, flight and freeze in the adult classroom

Work with your team to reduce classroom challenges and help trauma-impacted adults build executive functions to meet their goals.

  1. Develop informed empathy for learners: Use an understanding of trauma-impact to see and understand your clients' learning needs.
  2. Create a safe classroom environment:  Set up classroom structures and processes that help learners relax, increase their comfort level and free up bandwidth for learning.
  3. Nurture relationships: Use strategies to build trust and encourage new neural connections between the emotion and thinking centers of the brain.
  4. Elicit and explore limiting mental models: Leverage your relationship to help learners pull what they know from long-term memory into working memory where they can critically analyze beliefs and behaviors that aren't serving them.
  5. Offer enriched alternatives: Design and teach activities that support learners in exploring alternative ways to achieve what's important to them.
  6. Facilitate rigorous action plans: Coach learners in action planning to try out alternatives, avoid triggers, overcome barriers, and cue desired behavior.
  7. Address your training challenges: Create a plan to apply this brain-based and trauma-informed model to address your specific training challenge.

Coaching after workshop 1: coaching in curriculum design

After completing the Design Brain-Based Curriculum for Transformative Client Change workshop, extend and enrich workshop learning with one-on-one or small group coaching. 

Allow me to:

  • Review your teachers' curriculum design and provide feedback and refinement
  • Suggest learning activities to flesh out curriculum and help teachers build their activity repertoire
  • Guide alignment of curriculum design with the biology of learning science

Coaching after workshop 2: coaching in teaching and classroom management

After completing the Transform Fight, Flight and Freeze in the Adult Classroom workshop, support practical application of workshop skills with one-on-one or small group coaching. 

Allow me to:

  • Observe teaching and provide helpful feedback
  • Guide the creation of teaching growth goals and suggest resources for meeting them
  • Conduct skills practice sessions with feedback
  • Facilitate mini-sessions on emergent classroom management or teaching challenges
